What a good tile quote includes

Tile quotes vary more than any other because the work does. The quote should say what goes under the tile (backer board, uncoupling membrane, or nothing, and why), the mortar and grout type, the layout, and the flatness of the floor it is going on. Waterproofing in a wet room is a separate, named line.

Ask every contractor

  1. Membrane or backer, and the flatness check
  2. Grout type: cement, epoxy or urethane
  3. Layout, pattern and where the cuts land

Not sure tile is the right call? The eight questions rank it against everything else for your house, the tile page says who it is for, and FlooringFAQ’s guide covers what goes wrong with it.
